• What is Inland Marine insurance?

  Inland Marine insurance is a form of property insurance designed to protect property that is mobile, in transit, or used away from a fixed location, as well as specialized property that may not be adequately covered under a standard property policy.

  This can include goods in transit, contractor equipment, leased or rented equipment, and high-value items that move between locations or job sites such as photography equipment, mobile medical equipment, and fine art.

  Inland Marine coverages can also include Builders Risk coverage, which protects buildings and structures under construction or renovation. Builder’s Risk typically applies to risks such as theft, damage, or loss while property is in transit, at temporary locations, or during the course of construction.

  Kinsale’s Inland Marine insurance policies are highly customizable and can be tailored to specific industries, exposures, and types of property.

• What types of Inland Marine risks does Kinsale write?

• What is the difference between Inland Marine insurance and Builder's Risk coverage?

  Builder’s Risk is actually a type of Inland Marine coverage, although the two terms are often used separately because they address different aspects of construction-related risk.

  Builder’s Risk specifically covers a building or structure under construction or renovation, along with materials on-site, in transit, or in storage related to that project. It is tied to a specific project and typically expires when construction is complete.

  Inland Marine insurance, more broadly, covers mobile property, equipment, and goods in transit that are not tied to a fixed location or a single project.

  A practical way to think about it:

  • A contractor building a commercial office building needs Builders Risk for that project.
  • That same contractor transporting tools and equipment between job sites needs an Inland Marine policy for that equipment.

• What is the difference between Contingent Cargo and Motor Truck Cargo?

  Motor Truck Cargo (MTC) provides primary coverage for a motor carrier’s legal liability for cargo damage in transit.

  Contingent Cargo is secondary coverage designed for brokers and logistics providers when the motor carrier’s policy does not respond — such as in cases of insufficient limits.

  Kinsale is an active surplus lines market for both MTC and Contingent Cargo, with the appetite and flexibility to consider accounts that standard carriers decline.

  Kinsale’s MTC product is rated on the number of units operated. Contingent Cargo is rated on a sales basis since the insured does not own or operate trucks, and is subject to an annual audit to verify reported sales figures.

• Does Kinsale cover excluded cargo commodities?

  Yes…and no. Certain commodities are excluded under our standard Inland Marine form INL3003, including:

  • Autos
  • Alcohol
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Live animals
  • Firearms
  • Electronics

  However, that does not always mean these commodities are ineligible. Kinsale can consider adding back commodities from the INL3003 if we know they are hauling those items upfront. It’s important that these exposures are disclosed so they can be properly evaluated and priced. Early transparency around the types of commodities being hauled allows us to determine the best pricing and address any potential coverage gaps.

• Does Kinsale offer Contractor's Equipment coverage as a standalone Inland Marine policy?

  Yes. Kinsale writes standalone Contractors Equipment coverage, as well as in combination with other Inland Marine lines.

  Eligible equipment includes owned, leased, and rented contractor tools and equipment such as:

  • Excavators and cranes
  • Skid steers and forklifts
  • Compressors and generators
  • Miscellaneous tools and small equipment

  Coverage protects against physical damage while equipment is in use, in transit, or in storage. Equipment licensed for road use is not eligible.

  As a surplus lines market, Kinsale can consider contractors equipment accounts that the standard market declines, including those with prior losses or unusual equipment types.

• Does Kinsale write coverage for high-value or specialty equipment?

  Yes. High-value and specialty equipment is a core part of Kinsale’s Inland Marine appetite, particularly for accounts that are difficult to place in the standard market.

  This includes equipment such as:

  • Mobile medical and diagnostic equipment
  • Fine art and high-value collectibles in transit or on loan
  • Photography and film production equipment
  • Specialized contractor and rigging equipment
  • Scientific and laboratory instruments

  Coverage can be structured on a scheduled or blanket basis depending on the exposure. Underwriting will evaluate the type of equipment, its value, how and where it is used, and any prior loss history.

• Can Kinsale write standalone coverage for leased or rented equipment?

  Yes. Standalone coverage for leased or rented equipment is available, and Kinsale can consider this exposure alongside scheduled equipment.

  In addition to standard contractor tools and equipment, Kinsale can also consider certain leisure-type equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, and golf carts. Equipment licensed for road use is not eligible.

  Underwriting will evaluate equipment type, value, usage, operator experience, and contractual responsibilities.

• Does the Inland Marine Division consider prior starts for Builders Risk? If so, what percentage complete can be considered?

  Yes. Kinsale can consider prior or existing projects on a case-by-case basis. There is no strict percentage of completion that automatically disqualifies a risk.

  Underwriting will evaluate:

  • When construction began and the scope of work remaining
  • Prior insurance history and reasons for any delays
  • Whether there has been a change in the general contractor
  • Overall account details for owner-builder situations, which may be declined

  For projects generally over 60% complete, we may require an inspection. Current photos are required for all prior starts prior to binding.

  Projects that have received a certificate of occupancy or are listed for sale are not eligible, even if punch list items remain.

• Is Kinsale able to include the existing structure for renovation risks?

  Yes. Coverage for the existing structure can often be included as part of a renovation project, protecting the current building from damage during construction.

  Underwriting will consider the age and condition of the structure, scope of renovations, and occupancy. Residential occupancy is not eligible.

  We may decline coverage for the existing structure when the building has experienced significant prior losses such as fire or water damage, or has been vacant and is in deteriorated condition.

• My initial quote isn't quite where it needs to be. How can I request a revised quote?

  At Kinsale, the first quote is just the start. Our goal is to make sure your accounts get the coverages they need, and because our underwriters are experienced, creative thinkers, we tend to get it right quickly.
