3 Divisions & 1 Broad Appetite for Storm & Restoration Contractors

3 DIVISIONS. 3 CHALLENGES. 3 SOLUTIONS: Real storm & restoration contractor wins our underwriters worked on this year

Why Storm and Restoration Contractors Need Coverage Year-Round

Hurricanes take the spotlight from June 1 to November 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s official Atlantic hurricane season—and for a good reason. Even a single storm can cause billions of dollars in damage overnight. However, hurricanes are only part of the picture. Tornadoes, hailstorms, extreme ice and snow, and other CAT events present year-round risk, not just a seasonal one.

Brokers handling contractor accounts know all too well the flood of submissions storms can create. A restoration company can carry claims from three separate “storm seasons” and still be untangling coverage in the fourth, long after a single named storm has come and gone. That’s why submissions from storm clean-up, restoration, and remediation contractors don’t cluster into one quarter of the calendar. They arrive year-round, in every size and shape, from a two-person crew to a multi-entity operation.

Kinsale’s Small Business, Construction, and Environmental teams are built to handle even the most complex contractor accounts. Each division takes on a different piece of the storm and restoration contractor insurance market—by size, target class, or coverage need—and together they deliver a consistent appetite and creative solutions for the contractors whose hardest work begins after the skies clear.

Below are three real accounts our underwriters worked on this year.

High-claims entities combined

A newly formed storm-response contractor combined generator installation, storm shelter work, and debris removal under one entity—even the broker wasn’t sure how to classify it! Our underwriter got to work and quoted the account in under three hours. Months later, the contractor’s operations evolved, so our underwriter took care of the scope update with a single endorsement instead of a disruptive cancel-and-rewrite, resulting in no lapse and no added premium.

With widespread storm-related power outages expected, a broker had days, not weeks, to get $5M in coverage for a builder installing portable restrooms, showers, sleep/office/laundry trailers, tents, generators, and catering facilities for storm response crews. Although this is a unique class, our underwriter got creative and paired primary GL with Excess Casualty support to build the full limit and returned terms in three days flat.

A broker brought Kinsale three related roofing, restoration, and remediation entities. The account had bounced between five carriers in five years before coverage lapsed entirely over a billing mix-up. As loss runs came in piecemeal, the loss estimate grew from $215,000 to $655,000 across 15 claims. Rather than decline, our underwriter got the insured back on track by separating the risk, combining two entities with comparable claims history onto one policy with targeted sublimits, and carving out and excluding the third by name.
