Businesses with Commercial Property exposures can feel anxious during periods of severe weather, and hurricane season can amplify those concerns.
With weather experts releasing 2022 hurricane forecasts, now is a great time to remind your customers of the security that insurance delivers when things get bad.
Colorado State University (CSU) predicts a “very active 2022 Atlantic season” in its Forecast of 2022 Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity. The CSU team predicts 19 named tropical storms, including nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

AccuWeather also forecasts an above-normal season with 16-20 named storms, with six to eight hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes.
A major Category 3, 4, or 5 hurricane’s minimum sustained wind speed of 111 mph can be catastrophic for many types of structures.
According to CSU’s Phil Klotzbach the absence of El Niño is likely a major contributing factor to the high number of hurricanes in the coming season. “El Nino generally increases vertical wind shear in the Atlantic, tearing apart hurricanes,” he tweeted in April.
While the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, at least one tropical storm has formed prior to June in six of the last seven years. Year-round protections and vigilance are increasingly important as hurricane season is becoming more unpredictable each year.
Check with authorities in the field to stay on top of the most up-to-date projections: NOAA plans to release their forecast in late May, and CSU will issue updated predictions in June, July, and August.
